The three you will reach for

The same cards as the library below, put where they are asked for fifty times a week.

Coverage & Handoff

The four rules the program has actually written down.

4
4–6 PM late coverageWho owns a new consult or admission between four and six

How it goes

  1. CVICU and Consults alternate ownership of the 4–6 PM block; the schedule decides which of you has it today.
  2. The late fellow owns every new consult and every CVICU admission in that window, on both services.
  3. New consults are staffed with the long-call team’s attending — the matrix on Overview names them for the day.
  4. At 6 PM the window closes: routine new consults stop and only urgent and emergent work continues.
Related guide
Friday 24-hour CVICU callSix on Friday morning to ten on Saturday, both services

How it goes

  1. The CVICU fellow holds in-house call from 6:00 AM Friday.
  2. The call covers CVICU admissions and urgent or emergent consults — both services, one fellow.
  3. After 6 PM, routine new consults are deferred; urgent and emergent consults are evaluated.
  4. Saturday is post-call: finish the essential notes and the handoff and leave. 10 AM is the maximum.
  5. The Consults fellow takes the equivalent 24-hour call on Saturday.
After 6 PMWhat still gets seen, and what waits

How it goes

  1. Routine new consults are not taken after 6:00 PM.
  2. Urgent and emergent consults are evaluated whatever the hour.
  3. Identify the on-call attending for the question being asked before you start.
  4. Document what you did and hand off explicitly what you did not.
Need details

What happens to a non-urgent consult called in after 6 PM — whether it queues somewhere, or is simply picked up in the morning.

Answered by: Program

Post-call handoff and departureTen o’clock is a ceiling, not a target

How it goes

  1. Complete the notes that cannot wait and hand over everything that can.
  2. Hand off every unresolved issue explicitly, with what is pending and who is waiting on it.
  3. Leave as soon as that is done. 10:00 AM is the maximum departure time, not the expected one.
